Artificial intelligence, explained plainly.
What AI actually is, where it's heading, and how you can run it on your own computer — no PhD required.
What is AI, really?
Artificial intelligence is software that learns patterns from data. The AI you hear about today — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini — are called large language models (LLMs). They've read enormous amounts of text and learned to predict what comes next, which turns out to be enough to write essays, answer questions, write code, and hold conversations.
Think of it like this: a calculator doesn't "understand" math, but it's incredibly useful. LLMs don't "understand" language the way you do, but they're incredibly useful at working with it.
Why it matters for everyday life
🏠 At home
AI helps you write emails, plan meals, troubleshoot tech problems, learn new skills, and organize your life. It's like having a patient assistant who never sleeps.
💼 At work
From drafting documents to analyzing spreadsheets to writing code, AI is becoming as essential as the spreadsheet was in the 1980s. People who learn to use it have a real advantage.
🎓 For learning

Big trends right now
- AI agents — AI that doesn't just answer questions but does things: books appointments, writes and sends emails, manages your calendar.
- Local AI — powerful models that run on your own computer, no internet needed, your data never leaves your machine. (More on this below.)
- Multimodal AI — models that see images, hear audio, and watch video, not just read text.
- Smaller, faster models — AI that used to need a data center now runs on a laptop. This is the most important trend for regular people.
Run AI on your own computer
You don't need to send your data to big companies. Local language models run entirely on your PC — private, free, and available offline. Here's how to start:
Option 1: Ollama (easiest)
The simplest way to run AI locally. One download, one command.
- Download from ollama.com (Windows, Mac, Linux)
- Install it like any normal program
- Open a terminal and type:
ollama run llama3.2 - Start chatting — it downloads the model automatically on first run
Try these models: llama3.2 (fast, general), mistral (good all-rounder), codellama (for programming).
Option 2: LM Studio (point-and-click)
No terminal needed — browse, download, and chat with models in a clean app.
- Download from lmstudio.ai
- Search for a model (try "Llama 3.2" or "Mistral")
- Click download, then load it and start chatting
What computer do you need?
Most modern computers can run smaller models. For the best experience:
- Minimum: 8GB RAM — runs 3B parameter models fine
- Better: 16GB RAM — runs 7B-8B models well
- Great: A graphics card (NVIDIA RTX series) — much faster
- Models are measured in "parameters" (3B, 7B, 70B). Bigger = smarter but needs more memory.
For young people: get into tech with AI
If you're young and curious about technology, AI is the best door to walk through right now. Here's a roadmap:

🚀 Why this matters for your future
Every industry is being reshaped by AI — healthcare, law, art, engineering, business. The people who understand AI won't just have better jobs; they'll be the ones deciding how it's used. Starting now puts you years ahead.
